The JA Discovery Center Summer Experience is an engaging, hands-on experience that helps students ages 10-14 develop an understanding of basic business principles and the world of work ahead. They’ll learn first-hand what it means to be a citizen of a community, how to get a job, and how to make wise financial decisions to achieve the future they want for themselves and their families.

Day One: Economic Foundations

After completing this day, students will be able to:

  • Explain the function of banks

  • Analyze what an entrepreneur is and the characteristics of successful entrepreneurs

  • Identify businesses that are important in an economy

  • Explore JA BizTown and research careers they are interested in exploring


Day Two: Innovation and Branding

After completing this day, students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate understanding of civic engagement and civic duty

  • Explain how goods and services circulate as resources within an economy

  • Select and incorporate innovative products into their business inventory

  • Create and revise marketing plans for their business to include an e-commerce component

  • Critique other businesses’ marketing plans, offering tips for improvement


Day Three: Business Management

After completing this day, students will be able to:

  • Role-play as business professionals

  • Operate a business by advertising products, offering customer service, selling products, and paying invoices to other businesses

  • Role-play as consumers, shopping at the various businesses using their JA BizTown provided debit card

  • Participate in the democratic process by selecting a business for the Student Choice Award


Day Four: Financial Capability

After completing this day, students will be able to:

  • Analyze the impact of education on career and income

  • Recognize the effect of credit history on budget planning and purchasing options

  • Demonstrate understanding of the importance of saving money and how to allocate savings according their life scenarios

  • Budget net monthly income wisely to prioritize needs over wants

  • Compare and contrast the education requirements and income of various careers
