Atlanta teens receive personal finance skills with AT&T and JA of Georgia

 

ATLANTA, GA—JA of Georgia brought important financial literacy lessons to students in Atlanta as part of a contribution from AT&T and its AT&T Aspire initiative. Seventh grade students at Columbia Middle School experienced the 13-week JA Finance Park® program, which helps students build a foundation of personal finance skills through in-class learning and an experiential and authentic simulation.

JA Finance Park® begins in the classroom, with teacher-led lessons about topics like income, saving, debit and credit. The program culminates in an immersive half-day simulation onsite at the JA Chick-fil-A Foundation Discovery Center. The simulation gives students the opportunity to apply classroom learning by creating a family budget based on hypothetical life situations assigned to the students, such as job, salary, and family situation.

“Many of these students haven’t been exposed to managing finances, either because they haven’t had those conversations with their parents or haven’t had access to financial literacy programs in school,” said Jack Harris, President & CEO, JA of Georgia. “At JA Finance Park®, we aren’t just telling students how to manage budgets; we’re giving them the opportunity to make decisions and dictate the outcomes themselves.

 At JA Finance Park students have the rare opportunity to experience their personal financial futures first-hand. The immersive simulation, combined with the relevant experience of the volunteers, enables students to develop skills to successfully navigate today’s complex economic environment, and discover how decisions today can impact tomorrow.

“It is important to give every student an equal opportunity to learn basic financial skills like budgeting, managing credit and understanding a salary,” said Diane Watson, AT&T Services. “Watching that moment when it ‘clicks’ for a student is what makes this such an important investment – seeing them understand the tradeoff for buying those basketball season tickets is that their family may not be able to buy groceries that month. Students walk away with a much better understanding of what sacrifices their parents make for them and what it means to be a financially responsible adult.”

Established in 2003, JA Finance Park® is one of Junior Achievement USA's most successful programs, and more than 1 million students across the United States have gone through the experiential learning program since it first began.

The partnership between JA of Georgia and AT&T is a continuation of their joint commitment to providing learning experiences that help young people in the community develop the competence, confidence and character to make smart academic and economic decisions. AT&T volunteers assist in the delivery of JA Finance Park®, as a part of the company’s Aspire Mentoring Academy program. Through Aspire Mentoring Academy, AT&T employees connect with students to help them discover their passions and potential. More than 100 local teens receive career mentoring with Junior Achievement of Georgia and AT&T

Junior Achievement (JA) of Georgia is bringing important financial literacy lessons to students in metro Atlanta as part of a contribution from AT&T, through its signature education initiative AT&T Aspire. Students from Cross Keys High School and Meadowcreek High School were assigned an AT&T mentor through the JA Job Shadow™ program, which gives students a firsthand glimpse into a professional career.

JA Job Shadow™ begins in the classroom with three sessions to help students learn more about careers, including how to identify a career based on interests, steps in researching potential jobs and developing job-hunting skills like networking and interviewing. The students then will visit an AT&T corporate office to shadow an employee for half a day to see first-hand how education translates to a satisfying and successful career.  

“Many students may not have exposure to all of the career options that exist today,” said Jack Harris, President and CEO of JA of Georgia. “Through the AT&T Aspire program, we are giving students the opportunity to be exposed to different paths and to help them realize the endless careers available in their own community.”

During the 2015-2016 school year Junior Achievement and AT&T seek to impact more than 7,000 students nationwide. This could not be achieved without the support of AT&T mentors that are a part of the company’s Aspire Mentoring Academy program. Through Aspire Mentoring Academy, AT&T employees connect with students to help them discover their passions and potential. Aspire Mentoring Academy is part of AT&T Aspire, our signature initiative to promote student success in school and beyond.

Metro Atlanta teens provided hands-on experiences through AT&T job mentoring

Atlanta, GA – Junior Achievement (JA) of Georgia collaborated with AT&T on September 22 to provide more than 60 students from the Junior Achievement Magnet Business Academy (JA-MBA) at Banneker High School with job mentoring. The teens participated in a job shadow event with AT&T employee mentors as a part of the AT&T Job Mentoring Program. This event was one of many that will be held at JA Areas across the country during the 2015-16 school year. AT&T is seeking to increase the number of students with impacted by mentors in their lives, and intends to spend 1 million hours mentoring students by the end of 2016. 

The JA-MBA is a comprehensive high school program that creates immersive and authentic experiences by integrating real-world experiences and opportunities to transform the traditional high school experience. In its first year at Banneker High School, the freshman class of 150 students is led by six JA-trained teachers who deliver a blended curriculum consisting of traditional common core standards, interdisciplinary studies, and site visits like the AT&T Job Mentoring Program.  

The AT&T Job Mentoring Program aligns with this mission by enabling students to get out of the classroom, engage with the community and get the hands-on training to develop skills for future success.

Building on the success of the earlier AT&T/JA Job Shadow initiative, which provided students with more than 100,000 job shadow opportunities, AT&T employees shared life experiences and career advice through project-based activities during the workday. The students were exposed to things as simple as dressing the part and seeing a board room for the first time, to more intricate parts of the business world like balancing client relationships and international business.
